Last week, we introduced you to the HBS 2+2 program. If you missed it, be sure to catch up on our blog! This week we’re highlighting another opportunity to pursue a top-tier graduate business education even if you’re still in college. Read on as we present the Silver Scholars Program at Yale School of Management.
So just what is the program?
Silver Scholars was founded in 2001 in conjunction with Yale University’s tercentennial (yep, Yale is over 300 years old!) and the 25th anniversary of Yale School of Management. The program takes place over three years and is designed specifically for those who have recently graduated from their undergraduate institutions. In the first year of study, students spend their time developing foundational business skills and learning the mindset of a manager by participating in Yale SOM’s core curriculum. This allows students to develop management and analytical skills before they begin their second year. The second year is dedicated to a full time internship. This internship will help students put their business education into practice, develop crucial leadership skills, and help to give students a competitive edge when they pursue a permanent position after graduating from the Silver Scholars program. Silver Scholars have pursued internships at a wide range of prestigious private, public and nonprofit organizations, including Booz Allen Hamilton, Boston Consulting Group, CARE, Coca-Cola, Dow Jones, Motorola, Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, Pfizer, Time Inc., the U.S. State Department, and Vanguard. As you can see, being a Silver Scholar can open you up to world of opportunity, both during and after the program! Graduates have secured full-time positions at Barclays Capital, Boston Consulting Group, British Petroleum, Citigroup, Google, Kimberly-Clark, Mercy Corps, the New York Times Company, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the U.S. Treasury. For the third year, students return to Yale’s campus to conclude their MBA studies by taking electives focused on their interests and future career goals. Sounds like a pretty incredible opportunity to us!
So just who is the Silver Scholars Program looking for?
Yale seeks scholars of intelligence and common sense, who possess maturity and curiosity, passion and compassion. They want students who have distinguished themselves and made a difference in their particular field of interest. The Silver Scholars are looking for college seniors who will be future leaders in the business, government, and nonprofit sectors. So how do I apply, you ask??
Aspiring Silver Scholars must fill out the same application as those wishing to gain admittance to the full-time MBA program at Yale SOM. However there are a few additional instructions for those wishing to apply to the program:
- Only current college seniors are eligible to apply. This means that your graduation date must be on or after December 1st, 2018.
- Silver Scholars must provide two letters of recommendation: one letter from an academic instructor and one letter from an employer (if you have no work experience, than you may secure a letter from an extracurricular activity or volunteer organization in which you have actively been involved).
-
If invited to interview, applicants will attend a half-hour interview with one or more members of the Silver Scholars Committee. The interview will focus on your personal goals and interests, and your academic background.
-
International students are welcome to apply!
-
For the Work Experience section of the application: Do not list any work experience that took place during your undergraduate studies; instead, be sure to include them in your resume.
-
For the Activities section of the application: You may use this space to highlight up to two activities to which you dedicate a significant amount of time outside of class. You may include additional activities on your resume.
